Areas of hot and cold radiate invisible thermal or infrared energy. You can sometimes feel this energy. When you hold your hand near hot surface, you feel the warmth. If you go to the beach, you feel the heat of the sun. And if you’re not careful, you get sunburn. These are all because of infrared energy.

The real power of this technology is its ability to locate and monitor in real time both maintenance and production problems. Information about the temperature of a component or material can help diagnoses many related problems. Using infrared we can show failing, pitted contacts in electrical equipment, poor glue lines on box tops, and heat-treat oven heat leaks. Other areas of application include leak detection in flat roofs and building envelope heat leaks.

And we can then present the information in a manner that’s easy for management to understand and use. A photo or videotape of the area makes a good visual report that makes it easy to show them where the problem is.
