How much maintenance is enough?
.
Not only does excess preventive and predictive maintenance waste manpower and time, it can also cause you to have more breakdowns. A study by Corio & Costantini showed that in the period immediately after maintenance, the likelihood of equipment failure was significantly increased.

.
- To much preventive maintenance can cause:
- Reduced machine reliability
- Reduced machine availability
- More frequent corrective maintenance
- High parts cost
- More overtime
- Lost production
- Lost sales
- Off quality product
- Operator frustration
.
Optimize you PM program
.
A good planned maintenance system is designed with an optimal mix of preventive (PM) and predictive (PdM) maintenance tasks. The system schedules the tasks for maximum impact at minimum cost. And it increases the maintainability of the machines.
Effective preventive and predictive maintenance insures:
.
- Reducing the number of emergency repairs to a minimum by finding problems early.
- Minimizing the number of unplanned repairs.
- The least impact on production.
- You manage failure, not failure managing you.
.
Steve Turner of OMCS International documented average results of optimizing PM. He found nearly half of PMs could be improved or eliminated.
.
Some examples of optimization:
.
- Finding machines with too little or too much PM
- Finding PMs that occur too often or not often enough
- Finding maintainability improvements
- Finding training improvements
- If you’d like to see more detail on some of these examples, please see our white paper How much maintenance is Enough

We can help by optimizing the PM’s you do and how they are scheduled.
We can:
.
- Help Assess PM effectiveness
- Help Assess scheduling effectiveness
- Help Design both preventive and predictive tasks
- Help Integrate preventive and predictive tasks
- Help Schedule tasks, including leveling the work load
- Help Develop a history collection system that will capture as found conditions
